Records are created on the basis of publication texts – they may not contain, for example, keywords, abstracts or author’s addresses, if such information does not appear in the journal.
The initiative of creating BazTech arose in 1997 among libraries of the universities of technology as well as scientific and technical information centers. The project was launched in 1998 as part of a grant from the Committee for Scientific Research for the “development and providing access to databases of a regional or national character in computer networks”. The database was made available on the Internet in January 1999 on the server of the University of Warsaw IT Centre (CIUW), currently the ICM UW within the framework of the Virtual Library of Science. Since 1999 the project was co-financed by the Ministry of National Education and Sport (MENIS) within research support activity. In the years 2005-2015, grants were received from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MNiSW) as part of the SPUB WBN and DS WBN projects. Since 2016, the development of the database has been co-financed from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s funds allocated for activities promoting science (DUN), since 2020, the project has been co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the “Social responsibility of science” programme::
The list of indexed titles was created on the basis of journals subscribed by the libraries of the BazTech Consortium. Each institution received a separate range of titles for indexing. Records of articles are developed in 22 cooperating centers (remote work on ICM UW server, using Yadda software), while the records of journals are centrally developed by the coordinator.
In 2002, cooperation with publishers of journals indexed in BazTech was initiated, at first in terms of sending electronic versions of bibliographic descriptions, and then a consent to download necessary data from journals’ websites. In addition, publishers of approximately 300 journals granted licences for making full texts of articles available in the database. In this way, together with the creators of BazTech, they became a part of the open access movement.
For more information on the establishment and development of this database, see Publications about the database.
The project is implemented by libraries of 22 institutions on the basis of a contract of the BazTech Consortium. The coordinator of the project is currently the Lublin University of Technology. From May 2006 to February 2022 the coordinator of the project was the Cracow University of Technology. In the years 1998-2006 the coordinator was the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz.
